about

Live recordings from 2010 - our first year as a band. This collection (all recorded at Happy) features tunes long since retired...it was nice to be reaquainted with them while putting this together...kind of like finding that old trinket box and rediscovering photographs of years that time forgot. All recordings were made by Dan Adams using a digital video camera. I ripped the audio from the film...it's pretty raw, but that's what I love about live recordings. They are honest, transparent and in many ways the most true. These recordings in particular capture that shaky moment when a new band is beginning to find its feet. There is a naivety and nervousness that I love. Another highlight is the recordings of The Well, Long Way Home and Tunnels in the Hills which feature Mark's debut perfomance with us. I recall we had no rehearsal - he just turned up and played violin. After that, he was in. I also like Walking with the Dead. It is so raw and unfinished to me. The fact is, we had played it only once before - at a rehearsal earlier that week. The song has come a long way since then, but I feel very nostalgic for this performance...Finally, if you download there is a bonus video clip of the band playing Walking with the Dead and Dislocation live in 2011 @ our favourite venue Happy that shows one of our 'grand finales' involving as many people in our audience as possible!

about

The Dickens Wellington, New Zealand

'The Dickens' have proven that you can fit 5 people, 1 drum kit, three guitars, a keyboard and a violin onto a tiny stage, deliver an unrelenting set of chaos, control and melody and all the while finish at an hour respectable for a school night! These are my songs - recorded as demos on a very old, but faithful digital 8 track. ... more
